I have been buying this model for years. The last batch I tried ( 2 pairs) are bad quality. The shoe won't last longer than 3 month.

Very Poor Quality!

I have purchased this exact same shoe several times in the past, and the quality has been getting increasingly worse each time I have purchased them. When the brand Hunter's Bay was making these shoes, they were of decent quality, and lasted several months. But the quality of the Dexter brand of this shoe is terrible! With my most recent pair, the sole on the left shoe completely split apart after only 1.5 months of normal, everyday use!!! This is absolutely unacceptable! DO NOT buy these shoes! Spend a little more money and get a higher quality shoe. I will NEVER buy these again.

Big dissapointment

Cons: distressingly poor quality.
Comfortable and good looking shoe, but didn't hold up at all. I wear these shoes everyday, and I do put on some mileage though it's predominantly indoors, but over just a couple of months, with no abusive use, the shoe separated from the sole at the rear. Taking a good look at it now, I can see that the left sole was also fixing to separate if I continued to use it, but hopping around on one foot is not my style. Back to an old pair of Payless oxford style shoes untill I find something new. That pair also was weak on quality, but with that one I had a good sole, but an upper that tore on both shoes.

I use to really like Dexter Shoes but, now would not buy ever again. Fell apart after 3 months. Soles and heels wore down to nothing. Bad choice. Dexter, I am very disappointed in your product.

capped toe'd, more like cracked toe'd shoes!

The top part of the shoe (the cap toe part) started peeling and cracking everywhere. Also the sides are starting to split on my left pair, and are starting to look pretty bad. On the other hand the shoes are comfortable, after a long day on my feet. if you get these shoes, please be aware.

My husband bought this shoe in a 12W last September and has been wearing them to work every day. Around March, we noticed the top part of the shoe in between the laces and the tip peeling and cracking everywhere. They are all cracked now and look pretty bad. While he says they're comfortable and we got them on sale, it wasn't a horrible loss, but we won't be buying these again.

They cracked after 2 months

I love the look and especially the comfort of this shoe and I wanted to buy more pairs of them until I noticed that after two months of wear the sole cracked by the heel. I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one with this issue - thanks go out to all of you other reviewers!
Payless if you're listening - please go back to the other manufacturer of these shoes - I'd love to buy more when this problem gets corrected!

... Nine years ago I bought similar style at Payless, lasted 2 years, still using them as house shoes. Seven years I bought Payless, shoes lasted 2 years, still using them. Five years ago I bought this similarly, lasted 2 years., still in use. Three years ago I bought this style, they lasted 2 years, still in use. One year ago purchased this style, lasted 1 year, cracked sole. Three months ago bought, shoe quickly fell apart, sole cracked, heel broken entirely away, the ribs inside the mostly hollow heels all broken. I'm 6', 190 pounds, light, office, use.

I bought a pair from my local Payless in a rush for my daughter's graduation in 2010. I have worn these shoes to all formal occasions ever since. They are so comfortable that I have taken to wearing them around the house after work. They look good for formal wear as well as casual and wear well.

Pros: cushioned sole, flexible shoe, classic style, sharp and shiny, great value
Going to buy another pair of the shiny black cap-toe oxfords shown here, and also their tan suede alter egos. Dexter does a great job of making smaller sizes in a nice looking oxford dress shoe - classic look to the shape, I love the cap-toe detail - and by god the sole is squishy comfortable. These are extremely shock-absorbing and pleasant to walk a few miles in. I cannot say that for most dress shoes, particularly in this low low price range. Great shoe, I hope they keep producing this style in smaller sizes forever.

I was a a big fan of Payless' Hunter Bay captoe oxfords - they were great shoes, excellent quality, comfortable, and looked great. When Payless discontinued them, I bought 2 pairs of the Dexter Archers thinking they would be similar to the Hunter Bays. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed at the quality of both pairs. The shoe's finish began peeling and the soles separating within the first month of use. These shoes are a far cry from the Hunter Bay and I would not recommend buying them.

Poor Quality - Four Pairs Literally Fell Apart

Cons: soles crack, heels wear through / break, uppers rip / come loose, laces fray easily and break, poor finish, linings rip / separate, zero water resistance, clunky rubber soles, poor value at any price
I wear black oxford uniform shoes all the time, and was quite happy with previous purchases from Payless. I started with my local retail store, and later purchased online. I usually BOGO two pairs at a time, and keep at least two in rotation at any given time. That way they stay clean, dry and I always have a shined pair handy. These shoes don't get abused.
The past several pairs of black cap-toe oxfords I have purchased were absolutely AWFUL. The uppers tend to rip or separate on the sides, and the heels are hollow and wear right through or collapse. The soles crack where they flex under the ball of the foot after a short time.
Payless apparently changed suppliers, and the current version of the cap-toe oxfords that I need are substandard and an absolute waste of money and time.
